How to grow and care for your Anthurium plants

Light and temperature for your plant

Once you have your beautiful Anthurium plant at home you may want to know some tips and tricks on how to look after your indoor plant. Here are some of the main things to remember when looking after your Anthurium plants.

As mentioned Anthuriums thrive in indirect, medium to bright light conditions. But you must avoid keeping your plants in direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves. Place your plant in a light and bright part of your home or office. When anthuriums do not get enough light, they preserve their energy and produce less flowers or smaller flowers. Your anthurium flower will need to receive at least 6 hours of bright light per day.

Watering your Anthurium plant

In terms of watering, the Anthurium plant prefers the soil to dry out between waterings, before you give it more water. Water the indoor plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry. You can test this by just placing your index finger into the soil. If your finger comes out dry then you need to water your plant. Water the anthurium with approximately half a cup of water per week in the summer months. Less will be needed in the cooler winter months. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure your pot has good drainage, either with a hole at the bottom of the pot or plenty of well draining peat based soil.

Watering your Anthurium plant

In terms of watering, the Areca palms prefer the soil to be wet but not soggy. Water your palm when the top inch of the soil feels dry. You can test this by just placing your index finger into the soil. If your finger comes out dry then you need to water your plant. Water the Areca palm with approximately half a cup of water per week in the summer months. Less will be needed in the cooler winter months. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so make sure your pot has good drainage, either with a hole at the bottom of the pot or plenty of well draining peat based soil.

Soil conditions for your Anthurium plant

The best soil for Anthurium plants is peat-based potting soil to ensure good aeration and drainage. Avoid a heavy soil as this will retain too much moisture and may cause root rot.

As with all plants, Anthurium plants will require some extra ‘food’ every month. By fertilising your plants you are giving them more energy to grow and produce flowers and new healthy leaves. By fertilising your indoor plant once a month during the growing season (Spring – Summer) and once every two months in the winter season, you are helping your plant to stay as healthy as possible. Anthurium plants prefer a phosphorus rich fertiliser.

Care for your Anthurium plant

Regularly remove any yellow or damaged leaves to keep the plant healthy and attractive. Maintaining good, light, watering practice and fertilisation will ensure your anthurium plant will produce many dark glossy leaves, colourful flowers and bring joy to the surroundings.
